Thermostat Valve/Over Temperature Cut Out Device

This is a very important device, as it controls the temperature (60 – 70C) and will also cut off the electricity supply to the element through its over–temperature cut out, if it senses a very high (90c) temperature.
The thermostat labours hard, switching on and off thousands of times over a few years, and needs to be checked for performance at least every 5 years.

Imagine the scenario. The Thermostat has failed, your tank is reaching boiling point, and the Temperature Relief Valve is not functioning!!! Please get it checked.

GAS Hot Water units also have a THERMOSTAT, but it’s a bit more high tech than its electrical cousin. Mainly because it’s controlling the temperature, as well as the gas flow, and will also shut itself down if there is an over temperature or gas flow problem; this device also works extremely hard over the years.

In NSW, a tempering valve is mandatory for all hot water systems

Going On Holidays Tips

If you look closely at the large black dial, on top of your gas Unitrol valve, it is numbered 1 to 7. If you turn the dial to 1 this is the “vacation” point, the pilot light will stay on but the main burner will not fire up. When you return from holidays you just simply turn the dial to between 5 & 7, the burner will fire up & you should have hot water in about 1 hour.

If you’re Gas Hot Water Unit Pilot Flame goes out! There are relighting instructions on the inside lid of your tank, or for indoor models on the tank itself. If you have any difficulty at all, please call our office and one of our staff will be glad to give you all the instructions to get you going FREE; and if all else fails we will make arrangements to have one of our servicemen come out within 24hrs.

A water heater is a fairly simple system, and when it stops working, this issue can usually be traced back to one of a few component parts. Common and easily replaceable culprits include any of the following:

  • Pilot light (gas units) or circuit breaker (electric)
  • Burner/heater
  • Thermostat valve
  • Pressure relief/drain valve
  • Piping into and out of the unit

Each of these components is fairly simple to replace. If your hot water heater is less than ten years old, replacing the broken part is a sensible, cost-effective option.
